A young busy Silicon Valley Couple with two young boys brought me on their team of architect and builder to help with space planning and finish specifications.
They had been living in the existing home for a couple of years and were very clear about their goals for the remodel. First of all the style on the inside had to be very contemporary, but on the outside it should look cottage like.
The new home was to have all the “public rooms” in one loft like space with lots of natural light.
As a passionate chef she wanted a very generous kitchen with island and bar seating.
The two boys each should have their own room, they also wanted a guestroom to function as media-and-office-room and last but not least a separate master suite with walk-in closet and own access to back yard.
A powder room should be located near the living room, a separate laundry room should be near the bedrooms.
The back of the house was to have a big outdoor porch to hang out in summer with family and friends.
I took over the floor plan from the architect and fine-tuned the kitchen and master suite to maximize functionality and storage requests.
In the master bathroom for example we hid a roll-out vanity station behind tall double doors. My client wanted to be able to sit at the vanity, put make up on and when done, roll everything away to hide it.
The master bathroom was to be a serene zone, empty and calm. I proposed to order ready-made vanities from a manufacturer of contemporary bathroom furniture. Tall thin mirrors flank the center window. Functional wall sconces on the sides of the mirrors give good lighting.
Large scale floor tiles with very tight grout joints give the illusion of a continuous surface.
In the kitchen we added a pantry behind an opaque glass door. All lower cabinets were designed to have pullout drawers for easy access and clean-up.
Behind a wall between kitchen and living room, which is also the location for the door to garage we tucked in a desk-area and on the opposite side a boot-storage bench and above hooks for coats.
Just recently the clients told me, that they love the house so much, they would like to take it as is and put it in a more desirable area and setting. That is a great compliment.
